Clown Knives shouldn't be as common as they are, just like Pacus. I would say 6x3' footprint would be adequate, but they really belong in massive aquariums.

Ever seen a huge Clown knife swim in open water? Not in a home aquarium, because they never have space.. but it is awesome in a 2000g public aquarium, That's for sure.l

I've seen a huge clown knife in a 1000 gallon tank and it looked fairly happy, though it was sharing the tank with a close to full grown silver aro and close to full grown red snakehead. there were also some large pacus and huge cats as it was an lfs display tank. having seen these fish though at these sizes I could easily see how they definitely need huge tanks to be happy.

and I agree that such fish as pacus, clown knives, silver aros, TSN's, RTC's, irridescent sharks etc should not be as common as they are. what's worse is the info that's provided for them. I can't tell you how many lfs I've been to that have the little tags on the tank saying pacus grow to 8". :screwy:

no joke. I have a big silver and I feel sorry for him sometimes. although I did it a favor by getting it out of a 150 it still deserves more room than I can currently give him. Same with both clown knives that I have......

Im working on a pond for them so they will be happy.....such awesome fish.
(btw they are all 2 feet or less currently so they have plenty of room for now)

I agree that they should not be so readily available.,......its very very rare to see one at full grown sizes in home aquaruims which is sad. you would think that you would see some as common as they are:(

kiddie pool!!!!!!

Clowns will grow and grow. No stopping them even with tank size. Lets see, throw 2 clowns and a common pleco in a 55 how big ya think they will get? The pleco 13" and the clowns 24", thats 24" each. Thats what my clowns lived in before I got them. So believe me if you want clowns you better go big, nothing smaller than 240, IMO. :nutkick:

OK. So the fish would continue to grow until it is too large for the tank then die. I miss understood the lfs guy when he relayed to me that the fish won't grow larger than the tank. I took it as the fish would grow a few inches then just stop growing. I kinda thought that was a wierd statement from him. Thanks

Clown Knives grow very fast. I had one in a 10g (I know, I know) at work and it grew from 3" to 10" in 6 months. I was hoping to get a bigger aquarium by then, but yeah...I gave back to the pet shop.

If it was me I would no longer shop in that store. Obviously he doesnt care about the fish or the customer, and he just wants to make a buck. I've heard people at fish stores say that, and I will always correct them. morons

fish growing to their enviroment is only true in the way rally said earlier they will die first and i have seen a 20" clown knife in a 20 long before which pissed me off but the lfs wanted $200 for him i wanted to stick him in my coat and run....... my big CK, my silver aro and my big pleco have all outgrown my 110 and like i said before the CK and the aro are both less than two years old so like rally said most lfs employees are morons and you cannot listen to their advice
