hey all. i got a clown knife 12 inches. he is in my 125g ill be upgrading to a 1000 gallon in a few weeks so he will be going in there. but, he is really shy. i have driftwood and plenty of hiding places, including pvc. i put massivore delight pellets inside the pvc and he eats them. i tried feeding him frozen silversides, but he doesnt bite. however i want to know how to get him out of there he sits inside the pvc all day. wont move. only comes out for a few minutes at night then goes back in. do i maybe need some tank buddies? im planning to throw in some red bellied pacus as buddies for him but idk, this is my first time owning such an oddball fish lol. thanks for all your advice.

Welcome to knife owning. they hide. He's going to probably hide until you either remove the pvc or he outgrows the cave.

Trying dithers can't hurt. I used tinfoil barbs in my 125g to get my cichlids moving instead of hiding. worst case scenario, you get to watch something instead of nothing.

Maybe just give him his pacifier, I mean PVC at night.

lol. whats a dither? can a dither be any kind of fish? and hes a foot long i have to find tin foil barbs at least 7 inches+ right? lol. i was planning on getting 1 red belly pacu to be his buddies would that work? or would they fight lol.

Black skirt tetras are my favorite dithers:)

Please dont get a pacu.

ok. can i get them at my local petsmart? and do they have to be big? or can they be tiny little things? lol

They just have to be big enough to avoid being eaten by the CK. Tinfoil barbs and big enough silver dollars will work, however, my favorite dither fish are clown loaches and bala sharks. CLs large enough to go with a CK is going to be expensive, though. If you have the dollars for them, I say go for it! I have large bala sharks and large clown loaches with my CK right now as dither fish along with a school of large silver dollars. If you want to try a cichlid, a gold severum tends to go well with clown knife fish. I would only get one severum, though, to avoid a possible M/F breeding pair in which case the severums would become hyper aggressive. I would observe this rule with all cichlids.
