Hello All~

As this is my first time posting here, I may be in the wrong spot to ask this question. Please direct me if I am.... I would appreciate the help. I was looking up info on the site regarding my clown knife. One of the posts was from "aquaman45" and he was discussing ways to fix the protruding bony tongue that has popped out from below "Spot's" mouth. (I know the name is funny, my daughter was 3 when she named him...) My big question is, Spot is now 12 yrs old and doing very well. He lives in a 65 gal. tank and is about 14" long. This protrusion has been a problem for many years and I'm wondering if it can still be repaired like the post from 08-21-2012 says? My concern is that the end of the bone is a bit red as though it's irritated. However it's been many years since this has happened and I know the post says you should repair this as soon as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

My other question is this: One of his fins near his gills is completely red. It's also been like this for a while. I have recently acquired him since his owners are leaving state and have no way of transporting him on their long journey, so as his new owner I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to help him or should I just leave well enough alone?

Many thanks.

First things first would be a proper size tank for him.

Don't mean to sound rude, but I don't see how upgrading the tank size will fix the bony tongue "issue" Spot currently has. Would someone please be so kind and answer my questions? First off how do I go about fixing the bony tongue sticking below his jaw and secondly, does anyone know why one of his fins (located next to his gill) would be red in color? There's no growths, spots or fungus of any kind so I'm wondering what other possibility it could be.

I will do what I can to get a larger tank, but at this moment I'm more concerned about his fin and jaw.

Thank you.

I don't have an answer for the bony tongue- sounds like he tried to eat something too big and caused it to protrude. It may or may not go away on it's own or you can try pushing it yourself. As far as the redness around the gill area, check your ammonia level. The fish is severely stunted at 12 years old and 14" and needs a bigger tank. it's not a matter of seeing what you can do, it's a necessity. That fish should be 24"+ by now. Sorry to be that guy but his health issues are only going to get worse if he stays in his current environment.

+1 no one was trying to be rude by suggesting a new tank. But as strollo said. That fish is at least half the expected size. At 14" in a 65g tank. You would need huge filtration or water changes 24-48 hours. If you doing so then maybe its something else. But my main suspect is bad water perameters due to the fact that 65g for a 14" fish is not easy to maintain proper water conditions.
