i just purchased about a 4in clown knife the other day for my 125 and i woke up the followin day to find he had somehow slit his anal fin about a half an inch from where it starts all the way up to his belly...my question is should he be ok?

How's it acting? With some salt and a little TLC, it should be fine.

hes acting fine, swims fine...how much salt should i add? i have some aquarium salt handy....my tank is a 125

one cut is fine it won't bother him, it'll heal in 2 weeks.
finding out how he got it is more important

even with the anal fin seperated like that (ill try and get pics of him) ? JW if i should add some aquarium salt and how much...

maybe what i'm picturing is not as serious as what it actually is? cuts along the fins are fine. mine had it every so often when it got bit by its tankmates. now it's 18" and everyones scared of it. there was once when it had a temper tantrum and mauled my other ck until its fins looked like it was a hair comb and i had to separate them. even then it only had problems propelling itself and grew back in a few weeks. so i think the main concern for you is to find out how the ck got cut.

you can add a few tablespoons of aquarium salt for ease of mind but for just one cut on a fin it won't do much. from what i understand the salt spikes the fish's body reaction to naturally develop an extra slime coat. the slime helps to protect against bacteria and diseases on open-wounds and reduces stress on the fish.

thanks, i was just worried it wouldnt heal up and my fish be "gimpy" haha...i think he may have cut his/herself on a DIY cave of mine...i have ALL the edges filed down and i mean ALL of them bc i double checked, i think he done it by wedgin himself in a small crevice in between the rocks...

You can add a heaping tablespoon/5 gallons and that should be fine, some people like to add more. I woke up once and my clown had his nose ripped off and part of it was hanging by a thread. He ended up regenerating his nose just fine. That part that was hanging by a thread stayed there for a while (even though his nose had regenerated) and kind of flapped in the water when he swam. Eventually it fell off, I wanted to go in there sometimes and just yank it off.

Knife fish are well known for their ability to regenerate. I have read stories too about scientist doing studies on their ability to regenerate nerves pretty quickly too.

haha ok, yea i was scared to add the aquarium salt bc for a 125 it was the whole box! i bought that lil box of api salt not thinking
