I recently introduced you all to my strange unidentified knifefish, well he died Mysteriously about a week and a half ago. It was very odd. the fish was swimming around, feeding fine and seemed to not be bothered by any tankmates, even when I found the body it showed no signs of damage. The only thing I can think of is that because I didd a large waterchange it might have succumbed to SDS (sudden death syndrom) I read that some of the more delicate and unusual knives can suffer from this. It's a shame because he will be very missed.

To ease the pain I have ordered a Clown knife from the LFS now I have a few simple questions,

1. will clown knife eat bichirs?
2. Can I grow out the clown knife with my 2"-3" bichirs succesfully? They all eat the same kinds of food and have the same temprement so I wondered if its possible.
3. If not, I can put it in my 200g+ that is relatively empty only tankmates would be , Flagtail and oscar about 4", a pink tailed chalceus, a large pleco and dithers.

Only reason I ask, is because I want to make sure the clown is feeding well, and like with my bichirs I found its easier to put them in a smaller tank to feed them up first, would that be okay? I worry in the big tank he won't find the food.

And one final question,

Do they accept pellets floating or sinking, bloodworm and other frozen foods or will it have to be nothing but feeders from here?
I used to have an african knife that ate flakes from the top and was generally a lovely fish.

Thanks a tonne in advance, for the record I do know quite a bit about this fish I have done my research but I would just like to know what would be the best option for the fish in the long run. The one I kept before was in with too aggressive tankmates and it just withered away I want to avoid this happening again.

Come on someone? I'm getting the fish later today would at least like to know which tank he would do best in!

I believe you will be fine.
pellets floating or sinking, bloodworm and other frozen foods
1. depends on size of the Clown knife

Thanks for the responce, the Clown will be between 2-5" according to the LFS.
If I put him in the big tank I'm worried he won't be able to find food.
Problem is I know that young bichirs aren't very thick and that clowns have large mouths even when young, is it safe to keep the two together? for instance, does the clown only eat free swimming fish like feeders?

Sorry to ask so many questions its just like I stated my last clown didn't make it so I really want to make sure this one is healthy and happy. My bichirs are aroun 3-4" and around as thick as a pinky finger

CKs are VERY delicate when little... He WONT get your Bichirs... at least not right away! they grow rapidly when little! Also, dont feed live feeders or he may also ge for your other fish to! they eat ALOT! give him those cubes of frozen bloodworms! They WONT eat floating food (flakes, floating peelts). ESPECIALLY While young! I would also just put him in the 200 gallon if possiable... Those other fish wont be able to mess with him! But EITHER tank would be fine! Oh and btw Take Some Pics! Hope I Helped!:D

If you can id suggest adding a seperator into the tank. My knifefish tries to eat anything small that moves so id be worried keeping them together. If your smaller tank is 40+ gal stick gthe ck in there till he's eating good and growing.

Well If he would be better off in the big tank I could put him in there, the only issue is the tank is huge and Its hard for me to get bloodworms in there, because the dithers will swarm and eat anything that touches the surface.

I am power feeding the bichirs they eat around 4 times a day so they are growing pretty fast.

Here is the pros and cons for the big tank

Pro
It won't need upgrading
Dim lighting and many caves and floating plastic plants
Tankmates that won't harass it

Cons
The tetras eat anything that touches the surface even hikari gold cichlid pellets. I could give him feeders in the big tank but I worry that the oscar might eat them instead and the knife will starve.

At least in the small tank I can keep an eye on him and make sure hes feeding, but i definately don't want to lose those bichirs as they cost me about 3 times the price of the knife

just contacted the LFS and they are going to give me money off of the knife because he only has one eye.
The fish is about 6" so itl be going into the big tank with my one eyed oscar. Looks like I'll be having a theme in the tank of one eyed fish. at least for now

Great little guy, comes out during the day and ventures around. seems quite owner responsive. There are some elusive feeders in there for him to hunt and Im sure he ate some of the bloodworm I put into his cave earlier (its one of those lizard caves that you press against the glass so you can see the nocturnal lizard. works wonders for knives)
He has a scrape as you can see on his side which im sure is from him hitting against a rock.

so far so good
