Hi all, fairly new here, have had a huge love of aquariums and fish for quite some time, and I am finally getting to set up 2 46 gallon bowfront aquariums. while these are obviously too small to house any monsters in them, I was hoping to turn one into a Malawi tank, starting with maybe 10 babies, all 1 inch or less. The other tank is where I want the excitement of live feeding. I would like to have a clown knife (if purchased it will be about 3 inches), and since they tend to hide on the tank floor, I was going to put one or two needlefish into the tank as well. Both species will eat live feeders, the clown will get bloodworms/brine shrimp as well. My question is do you think that this is a bad idea since the clown will eventually outgrow the needles by a lot (40" to 12") or should they get along for the most part since one is always going to be on top and the other is on the bottom 99% of the time?

Wll i have a clown and i bought it like 3 months ago and it only grew a inch and a full grown gar is huge but still the gar will out grow the clown because the gar has higher groth rate but sonner or later the clown will out grow gar but in about years from now

I would not recomend putting knife fish inn such a small tank...even if they are small to begin with. They will out grow the tank, and you will have to either upgrade to a larger tank, or get rid of them. If you want predatory fish, look a little more into it. Find something that is not going to get too big...Some of the guys out there on this site should beable to help, I am just into the big fellas, and have a few large tanks. I am not really exprieanced with the small predators, I have had knife fish before, and they are nice to watch eat, but for some reason, mine got a little aggresive twards the oscars I had them with...Had to get rid of them. Well, good luck! And happy fish hunting!

I wouldn't try a knife with anything that you think is only twice as large as it can swallow.....There mouths are MASSIVE and they will eat ANYTHING.

Clowns= a pretty big food bill too ;)

I got mine both at about a foot long and they had only been fed feeders before so they eat about 100 or so rosy reds a week....

Thanks for all the advice, I plan on moving the clown to a 125 in less than two years, hopefully he wont outgrow my smaller tank before 2 years? And as far as what type of needle, all I now is it is labeled a "needlefish" with a max size of 12". Thanks again!

Your clown knife will easily outgrow a 46g bowfront within 6 months from purchase.
