My CK seems to have poor eyesight when I feed him, it seems like he misses the food, shrimp or earthworms. He eventually finds the food, is this a common characteristic?

They have very poor eyesight and their eyes tend to get cloudier as they age. They make up for this by being mildly electric. That and that they are nocturnal. This is widely known.

Knifefish also have a great sense of smell, so he'll find the food when he's ready.

I have a 13" CK and it does the same when food is on the bottom. Today I watched it smash a floating krill that was being blown by the filter. Maybe they can see better if food is above them?

I am starting to hand feed the CK, when he rises to the surface I lower a worm or raw shrimp for him to eat.
