hey, so i just got a quick question. i have a few clown loaches, and it seems like in comparison to mine, all the clown loaches i see in the "pet stores" [not at my lfs where i bought them, but at the big name stores] have very pale colors. my loaches are a nice medium, slightly reddish orange, and the ones i've been seeing are a very pale, almost yellowy orange. i'm thinking perhaps this has to do with wild-caught versus captive bred? but i'm probably wrong.

I think it depends on their environment. Loaches tried to adapt their habitat like if you have a dark background or dark substrate clown loaches tends to have dark stripes and dark body based unlike the other who are using barebottom tank loaches are light and pale in color. hope this helps :)

stressed, not in the best water or tanks, and probably not getting the best food . . .

I remember when I traded-in six big, fat clown loaches at my LFS . . . the girl who manages the store looked up and just said "wow!!" . . . she gave me I think $15 each in store credit, and had sold them - - over the phone - - before I even left the store

my point being: we take better care of our fish than most LFS can

Older clowns can also "gray out" and lose their bright colors. This behavior can be caused by a few other things as well.

A good diet and a good home will color them up in no time. Also, as far as I know, all Loaches are wild caught. They are extemely difficult to breed. I wish they weren't, I'd breed them like crazy.
