What do people find is the best substrate for Clown Loaches?

I have some medium sized gravel in there now. I am considering changing to a finer black gravel as this would look nicer against the blue LED lights.

What does everyone use, or alternatively, what is the most appropriate for Clown Loaches?

I find that pool filter sand is the best. It does not erode the barbels, the loaches love to sift and dig in it, and it is super easy to keep clean. Not to mention cheap.

I recently changed to black sand thinking it will make the colourful clown loach really stand out, but instead the clown loaches have all turned really dark dull colour. I'm thinking of changing to another sand.

+1 on the pool filter sand.... easy to clean and probably easier for the loach to graze cuz food items stay above the sand instead of sinking between the gravel
