Yesterday I had a clown loach die pretty suddenly. I had two of them in the tank and the bigger one had come down with ich, but I caught it early and treated with Mardel Quick Cure (Malachite Green). I had gone through the full medication cycle and the bigger clown loach was much better - no spots left, no more flashing. Throughout the whole treatment I had turned the temp up to 84, added an air stone, and kept an eye on all other fish in the tank. None showed any signs of ich or any other illness - including the smaller clown loach.

Then yesterday, the smaller loach (not the one with ich) suddenly started swimming sorta drunkenly and breathing rapidly. About 10 minutes later he was swimming around upside down. 10 more minutes and he was resting on his side on the bottom (fairly normal for a clown loach). A few minutes later he was swimming drunkenly again vertically in the corner of the tank. Shortly after that he was stuck to the filter intake. The whole symptom to death process lasted less than an hour and was preceded by 100% healthy behavior and looks.

Does anyone have any idea what might have happened here? The only thing I can think of is that I got him about 2 months ago and maybe he had some sort of parasite when I got him that survived quarantine and just took a while to take him out. Any thoughts?

Possibility the treatment of meds was too much for the smaller CL.

yeah that crossed my mind too, I just crossed it off because all during treatment he was his typical active self. Then I ended treatment, did a 50% WC, added new carbon, and the clown died more than 36 hours afterward. I thought if it was the medication it would be more gradual and during treatment, or at least close to it.

It's important to only half dose with clowns and scaleless fish. Sorry for your loss.

Yeah I know that in general loaches can be sensitive to medication, but I've used Mardel on loaches for years and I just do 25% water changes before each dose, never had a problem until now

sorry for your loss. Also ich can live on the gills without being seen on the body

Some loaches just can't handle meds like that. Need to use a very very modest dose but even that won't always be enough.
