I am almost done setting up my 180gal tank. I will be transfering my 6 clown loaches from there current smaller tank to the larger one. I have been keeping them in a bare-bottom tank that has lots of driftwood. I want to put gravel over half of the new tank's bottom but some people have told me that clown loaches shouldn't have gravel. Is this just the opinion of a few people or is gravel really a poor choice?(I don't want to use sand)

I have a 240 gallon with 3" of small to medium smooth gravel. My four loaches are 4-5 years old and they love to dig and look for bits of food in the gravel bed. It depends on what you like. I like a natural looking tank with rocks, driftwooods, logs, plants etc. Gravel won't harm your fish.

Smooth gravel wont hurt them, especially if its only in half the tank. Sharp gravel will hurt their barbels, though. In fact, you will probably see them moving the gravel around for you! Sand is best for them, but smooth gravel works just as well as barebottom

I agree with the rest so far. I have smooth river pebbles in my tank and they love to dig around and move the gravel looking for bits of food. As long as it is smooth and not too big, then it shouldn't be an issue. There is also a corner of the tank with sand that they do play in as well. Depends on what their mood at the time is, as to where they are going to play at the time. Very active and fun to watch.
