clown loaches and rays - is it a good mix?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think rays learn pretty fast that they have barbs on them and leave them alone

I would say the bigger the loach and smaller the ray the better of course

I have two, six inch clowns in with two ten inch stinrays they clean up after the rays eat they're great with rays.

depends on the temperament of the rays.

these guys quite slowly, so you would wanna try get a big one. as rays (motoros/leos) will outgrow them very quickly

Also these guys are sensitive to salt, so that may become an issue if you ever need to treat your tank.

This is just info i have came across when considering the same thing,

but on the flip side, clown loachs have loads of character!!!

The ray will be fine but the loaches is not. Since both is bottom swimmer so your loaches will have no room and can't compete for food with ray. So if you want to have a best look and active out of your loaches then do not mix them.

The clowns wont have any room? Thats nonsense. Also the clowns will get more than enough food. What i have found was that when i feed my hystrix, the clowns will swim under the ray to steal the shrimp. Also the rays will just swim right over the clowns when swimming around the tank. Its actually quite funny.

I think you may have taken the "no room" a little too literally.

I think there are different types of ray keeper, some like the upper levels and the rest of the tank to look full or active others just keep rays -there is not right or wrong to this.

My tank looks empty right now as I have 2 small (ish) rays plus one fire eel at 12inches and thats it in 300gals but I am thinking that they will be a little too large for this by the time that they are fully grown so light stocking is better for me.

The Clown loach issue fits in here on competition for space but I do have to agree that clowns are not shy and will bully their way in - they should be kept in a group and you do run a small risk that if the rays get to try and eat the loach you COULD end up with the ray dieing from a tusk stuck in the throat.

I got rid of my loaches when the rays arrived but I have heard of many co-existing. Your choice and your risk.

thanks for all the feed backs.

right now i have 2 5inch marbles motoros and like 10 5-8 inch clowns. i would hate to get rid of one or the other if they couldnt live together, because i love the way clowns look when they just torpedo to the other side as a group and how my rays just levitates.

I just moved in 13 8-11" clowns into my big tank and lost 2 the next day to a large pregnant castexi. This was due to me probably underestamating the amount of food she actually needed to consume. I upped the food they get and have had no problems since. I really like the combo myself.
