I currently have 4 clown loaches, 3 are 4-5" and 1 is right around 2". The smaller one will come out and swim the length of the tank and such, but the three larger ones hide all the time. Is this normal?

Mine usually are out in the day time and hide at night. I see them hiding frequently at fish stores. You could try adding a 5th.

Well it could be my lighting then, I am currently doing a low light setup for a few weeks (to see how I like it). Only using a 20" single bulb strip on a 6' tank. So they could be thinking that it's darker/night and keep hiding?

Probably not the lighting. As long as they differentiate between night/day it shouldn't be a problem. Loaches are better in groups of 5 or more som maybe adding a 5th would help.

do you have other occupants in the tank.. mine used to be like that for awhile as well.. adding some community fish has brought them out more.

^ That. You need some dither fish --- middle swimmers that will reassure your skiddish clowns that all is well and it is safe to come out. I have assorted rainbows in with mine.

The other thing you can do that helps, clowns should really be fed 3 times a day in small amounts. Not only is this beneficial for their health, but it also helps them associate you with food. And food is good. So you must be good to, right? You want your clowns to see you and think "o hes here to feed us, lets dance!"

Mine can't stand any added light to tank. During daytime active hours, they don't mind room or tv lights, but get real skittish with direct light. I limited hiding spaces that completely conceal them and don't use strong lights and i see them much more often.
