I currently have a Malawi set up 90g tank which has play sand and ocean rock and looks like a marine set up.

I was thinking of ditching the Malawi's and trying something different and have always like the activity and colour of Clown Loaches. Would clown loaches work in this set-up? What other fish would go well with them in a 90g marine look tank?

Thanks

or could they even be kept with malawi's?

I never see my Synodontis unless the lights are off

I had 4 clown loaches in my 180 gallon Malawi setup and never ever had a problems no of my cichlids seemed to mind them and my fish were 4.5 to 12 inches with no issues at all so you should be fine I see a lot of tanks that are African setups with clown loaches as long as they can't eat the loach I wouldn't worry about it

Clowns and african cichlid mix seems to work often based off the pics and testimonials I've seen.

Despite what some say(note the loach forum on other site), clown loaches and some of the relatively milder africans can mix and they do well...I would not put them with super aggressive ones though.

IMO the problem isn't mixing them with the cichlids, but the different water and tank size in this case. A 90g will be too small for the clowns (if you don't want to stunt them) in a couple of years time, and clowns and rift lake cichlids come from habitats with fairly different water (high pH/hard, 24-6C, lake water vs low pH/soft 27-30C fast flowing rivers), but if you're going to ditch the malawis (or willing to meet in the middle with water conditions) you should be ok.
