i have heard numerous opinions about Clown Loaches and their fondness of foraging in the substrate. im here today to ask for people's opinion on having a soft substrate Vs. barebottom.

whats ur opinion and why?

I think the most important thing for Clown Loaches is a hiding place. I think they would be happy with barebottom as long as they were provided with a hiding place.

i agree, that's what i initially thought as well. specifically, i want to know why some people would choose one over the other.

Keep them in a large group(9 or more) and they couldn't care less about hiding spots. I'm sure they would be fine on barebottom as lond as food is present.

excellent point!

its called: Predator satiation

however, im still looking for opinions on why one is better then the other. i have my own opinion but i feel that my knowledge is insufficient in that category; specifically, in relationship to Clown Loaches.

the point of this thread is to merely brainstorm pros and cons about the subject. the brainstorming process is either through fact, opinion and/or personal experience.

regardless of my attempts to brainstorm the subject, i do appreciate other information that will be useful to myself and others. i.e. the facts/opinions of yourself and Angler

thank you both.

I've had more or less the same group of clowns in a variety of substrates from gravel to sand, to barebottom and haven't noticed any exceptional difference in behavior the common element between the setups was I always had hiding places never a completely bare tank. Althhough my current barebottom setup is an acrylic tank so there's a piece of wood directly underneath the tank.

When I had gravel in the tank it was entertaining to watch them forage around for pieces of food that got away during initial feeding. The only time they have acted differently is when there are no hiding spaces in the tank substrate or not they get skittish and were prone to darting back and forth across the tank.

It could just be in my head but compared to when I had gravel I could swear the loaches barbels are pretty long in the barebottom setup or maybe its just because I see them more since they got comfortable enough to beg for food when Im in front of the tank.

Anyways in short I'd say clean water, food, and hiding places are the most important things for loaches.

this is more or less what i want to hear. thank you.

one more thing:

i have scenarios for u and everyone, i would like everyone to choose one and explain why they chose it.

Scenario one

- bare bottom
- clean water
- good food
- NO hiding spaces

Scenario two

- soft substrate
- clean water
- good food
- NO hiding spaces

u have to choose a Scenario , which one and why?

remember this is just brainstorming, im not saying one is the truth.

I agree. I have 17 of them in an 80G Marine land bow front that's bare bottom with a large piece of bog wood and they love it...

scenario one, i have a lil 20 gal with a couple small clowns and it is barebottom with one large fake turtle for them to hide under. they seem to not mind the glass bottom and i rarely find them hiding under the turtle.

so why do u prefer Bare bottom instead of soft substrate?

thanks for ur input by the way. :)
