i have heard numerous opinions about Clown Loaches and their fondness of foraging in the substrate. im here today to ask for people's opinion on having a soft substrate Vs. barebottom.

Althhough my current barebottom setup is an acrylic tank so there's a piece of wood directly underneath the tank.
When I had gravel in the tank it was entertaining to watch them forage around for pieces of food that got away during initial feeding. The only time they have acted differently is when there are no hiding spaces in the tank substrate or not they get skittish and were prone to darting back and forth across the tank.
It could just be in my head but compared to when I had gravel I could swear the loaches barbels are pretty long in the barebottom setup or maybe its just because I see them more since they got comfortable enough to beg for food when Im in front of the tank.
Anyways in short I'd say clean water, food, and hiding places are the most important things for loaches.
