I have a breeding pair of midas cichlids in a 120 gallon (4x2x2). The male is about 6", the female is smaller. I had planned to put clown loaches in the tank (currently I have 3 6"ers in a 40 gallon breeder), but I'm not sure how well they would do in the 120. Of course I could give them some PVC pipe caves and they would survive, but it isn't worth keeping them if they'll hide all the time. Also, are they likely to eat the eggs? The cichlids laid them in a flower pot so at least they could guard them fairly easily.

Does anyone have experience with this combo?

I have 7 clown loaches ranging from 3 to 6 inches in with my pair of istlanum and its flawless. They work great, dont hide and are constantly out and about. The istlanum spawned about 6 weeks ago so I have about 100 1/2" fry in the tank and the loaches havent eaten them...then the istlanum spawned again last night so their are about 400 more little tiny fry that arent getting messed with.

they work great for me!

I have 7 clown loaches w/ my SRT pair and they don't mess w/ each other. My pair laid eggs in a flowerpot also. I haven't had any problems. The female usually chases them off before they even get close anyways.

Cool. I think I'll wait and see what happens with this spawn and then transfer them in.

Also what color should the eggs be if they're fertilized?

Honestly I would't. My old F1 pair from Jeff Rapps wouldn't tolerate anything in their tank once they started pumping out the young. Had to remove a green phantom pleco that they were relentless with. Just have that spare tank ready. When it comes to a breeding pair of Midas a 125g is not that big. Good luck
