I have a 180 right now that I want to make into a planted tank for my Loaches. What kind of plants and substrate can I use that wont hurt the loaches? I'm not too concerned about the loaches hurting the plants, I'm setting up the tank just for the loaches.

filter sand is best, then maybe pea gravel. Amazon sword always look good, as do anubias and java fern. A little driftwood and your loaches will be right at home!

Amazon swords will be chewed up.

Sand or small gravel will be good. Plants might like some eco-substrate made for plants. As for plants get the ones that will do good in the lighting you have or will have, group them together according to lighting requirements. Add some wood as well.

I used to keep clown loaches in regular, dark colored gravel in my 55 gallon tank. My clowns seemed happy. They would even pick up the gravel with their mouths and make a pile. I later moved them into a 125 gallon tank, with smaller gravel. Sometimes when the clown loaches would take off quickly, the water would disturb the substrate, which would eventually uproot the plants. I found out the it's best to use eggcrate on the bottom of the substrate when using loose substrate with CL's. This way, when the plants grow out and spread their roots, they would eventually root themselves onto the eggcrate.

I have never experianced clowns eating my amazon swords in all the 14 months I've had the plant.

There might be another culprit, but I have seen them going over the leaves.

My clowns love plants with broad leaves. I have heard of some people having good luck with clowns not even touching their plants. Unfortunately, vast majority of us CL owners will poke holes at plants.
