I have a clown knife, a royal knife, and a shovelnose cat; all three of them take gulps of air throughout the day, not just after they eat. When I had my brown knife it did too. Far as I know it's normal. I've had mine for several months and they've been doing it since I got them and they're still alive and eatin' good.
The bichirs have lungs (or swim bladders that serve a dual function.) They have to in order to get adacuate oxygen. It also allows them to survive in the wild in water with very low a oxygen content. I have 4 (2 senegal, 1 albino senegal, and 1 ornate) and I watch them do it all the time. Just be carefull that they have enough room @ the top of the tank otherwise it's possible for them to either jump out or hurt themselves on the lid.

My knife does it as well he'll swim fast to the surface and gulp and then do this dive thing back to the bottom, does it all the time has since i got him. Recently got a baby CK he does it as well.
my clown is now 12" and growing fast.he is getting quite a temper on him too i would hate to have to get rid of him if it becomes a seriuos problem
How long have you had it? What else is in the tank with it? How large is the tank? My clown's @ 8" and he's very gentle (except with feeders.) Even to the smaller Royal Knife and the RTSN catfish. Hell, I even had a pleco that was only about an inch and they never tried to eat him.
