So apparently my female is REALLY happy about finally having a mate after all these years -- I just left to pick up pizza for dinner and when I came back, I noticed they had uprooted that big pink plant in their "corner", dug a big pit in the sand, and were doing the wiggly dance and winding around each other!!!! The past 2 days I've noticed them picking at the rock in their corner and cleaning it, so I'm hoping this means they're thinking of breeding!

So here's my question -- if they do lay eggs, should I move the piece of rock into a tank on its own, or leave it be and trust that the parents can defend the eggs well enough from the puffer and the velvet damsel I have in there? They are very protective of their corner and NO ONE is allowed in there except for my peaceful mandarin dragonet, which they seem to not mind because he helps them clean their rock. They are both the biggest fish in my tank and the others are very respectful of their space. If I need to move the eggs, how should I set up the 10 gallon tank to best support them before and after hatching? I REALLY want to get a few successful babies from this pair!

You should do some serious reeding on breeding clowns

You will need to leave the rock in there with thee eggs on it and (I think) after like 8-10 days 30 mins after the lights go out in the tank you geta flash light and you'll see the little buggers swiming towards the light. this is when you scoop them out and put them in the nusery tank
You will need to have live ROTIFERS in three stages ready to feed them, and in the small tank just have an air stone, nothing else..
The first month is the hardest..
Do some research and you'll learn alot.

lol... but no time for that now

if you're serious about at least hatching these guys move em to a new tank...

the mandarin may not be eating the eggs now, bu i guarantee he'll take the new borns

I think mine may be going at it as well.

I've heard that too.... Our LFS breeds clowns and the ones he doesn't have set-up in anemones he uses a ceramic pots and coffee cups with the bottom broken out set up against the side of the tank they go crazy for it.

I myself would isolate the 2 to a tank were they can breed and not have to worry about it.

I did read about the ceramic piece idea, I thought about putting one in their corner to see if they like it. It would also make it easier to remove the eggs the day before hatching and place them into a separate tank (per most articles I've read).

In regard to rotifers, where would I buy them from and/or how would I culture them? Would it be in the same tank the fry are to be kept in or a separate one?

Well if your serious about breeding and raising the young you should consider joining MOFIB and you'll get everything you could dream of answered there. I also moderate for them as I have really done a lot of Marine ornamental fish and invert breeding myself as well as a lot of research come check us out sometime.
