do clown loaches need substrate? i want bottom dwelling tank mates for my tank with a small arowana, silver dollars, and severums. i have a 135g tank and i keep the bottom bare for easy cleaning. would CL's work in my tank?

They would prefer sand, but several people on here keep CLs in bare bottom tanks.

Is there any decor in the tank?

I do admit that an aquarium itself is not very natural place for a fish but never the less one should always at least try to imitate the natural habitat as much as possible and having some substrate is a part of that. After all, a big tank with a good natural plantscaping, substrate and some driftwood/rocks/etc is much more beautiful combination as a whole don't you agree? At least your fish propably would. ;)

i do prefer the look of a natural setting. ease of cleaning drops when plants, substrate, and driftwood come into play. i had a 40g planted tank for years that i loved, but cleaning it was a b*tch. i'm using the 135g tank primarily for my arowana that i am growing out so keeping it simple and easy to clean is paramount. perhaps clown loaches are not right for this tank...

ive got mine in with pea gravel at the moment... im going to switch them over to sand and pea gravel..

sand! my big and small CL love sand they like to dig caves also its easier for them to find food on the surface.

Some of my clowns do also dig caves under few hollow driftwood pieces instead of going into the wood piece. I think it is also easier to clean the bottom with sand when compared to ones that have a little bit bigger pebbles. All the waste matter tend to keep on top of the sand while with pebbles the crap tend to go between the stones and into the bottom eventually.
