I was looking into purchasing a battery back up and a buddy of mine is trying to sell me his for $75 and I was hoping someone can tell me if its a good deal and how long would it power 2 penguin 350? or with a fx5 included. I have no experience with UPS battery back ups. Here is a product link of the one that he is selling to me. Thanks, Joe

it says the battery will last 8 minutes at half load and 6 minutes with a full load. doesn't sound like it's worth $75 to me. i think that is designed to give you time to shut off your computer normally in the event of a power outage, not to keep things running when the power goes out.

that would be my guess, i wouldn't do it.

Can't find the power consumption of the Penguin but the FX5 is a 50 watt unit. You'd get about 2.5 hours. Sorry though it was an industrial server unit with the time in hours not minutes.

so with this unit, I should get 2.5 hours from my fx5 with a power outage? sounds good. that probably mean my penguins would last alot longer?

Battery Size 12V/7AH is low.. but at $75 your not going to find anything better thats for sure.. i work in a hospital as a bio medical engineer and i work with battery back ups on most of my large or critical equipment and typically i am willing to spend $500 or more for a good back up for our computers ..

the only thing is you might need to change the batterys which is not that bad of a job.. battiers plus or somewhere online can sell you new batteries for the thing and it should improve the proformance a bit..

ask him if you can try it out.. and simulate a power failure .. aka unplug it after a full charge (8 hours) and see how long it last..

but really $75 is not going to buy you anything near this back up so i would say it is a good deal

shows 13 5 star ratings and people have been happy with the unit which shows that it is probibly a solid unit .. since people are 1000% more likely to share there opinion when its bad .. and there is no bad opinions .. GREAT sign .. and its $300 on tigerdirect .. as long as that is the same unit i would say go for it .. only thing is you might need to change the batteries which will cost a little bit ..but still better then buying the thing outright ...

Can't find anything on the penguin 350 but the Tetra Whisper 60 is an HOB with a 330 GPH flow rate. I'm assuming it has a similar power consumption at 9 watts plus a few watts for the spray bars so assume 12 watts total to compensate for the back pressure of the spray bars. The two penguins will run for 5 hours.
