I have been keeping cichla for a little while now & have quite a few tanks. I am often moving bass around from one tank to another as they grow out of one & into another. I keep a mix of co-inhabitants & I am starting to believe it has positive benefits on the bass & their coloration. Between creating more aggression (& therefore more color IMO) in the bass, I also believe just having different types of fish/rays/whatever is a big positive for bringing out the best in the bass. The other fish also creates varied interaction similar to what they would have in the wild. Any other opinions I would be interested to hear. (an excellent diet & highest quality water parameters is assumed)

I think that could play some part in their appearance but I think diet and genetics play the biggest role.

I feel genetics gives a fish it's potential, but all other things combined bring out that potential. Some will be naturally gorgeous fish no matter what, but some will have the potential that might come out or might not. What I am saying is the surroundings can bring that out.

Nope. Unless the tankmate is aggressive and stressing him out.

Juvies change color and aggression a lot as they grow. Like to see if your theory hold true as they become adults. You may be on to something.

The cichla I have kept with SA and CA cichlids have always seemed to have more personality and color. while the cichla kept with their own species seemed dull in comparison. Just my insights after keeping them.
