I broke my 29 gallon tank so now I have to move my 2 black moors and white cloud minnows into my gerbil's 40 gallon tank and use the leaking tank for them. I am going to try to do an instant cycle here. In the mean time I am keeping them in a 70 litre rubbermaid bin with a filter and all my gravel. I have silicon but my dad says the cracked wall of the tank could explode and I believe him.

Now here's my plan: I get my old blue gravel from the tub and put it in a clean ice cream bucket. I am going to buy a bit of potting soil ASAP. I will add the potting soil and plant my new plants, then put sand on top and fill it up with tank water gently. I place the bucket on the sand for an instant cycle! (then I remove a handful of gravel every couple days until it is all gone... this'll work won't it?)I am going to use a cheap method of adding CO2... the yeast and sugar method.

My planting will include:

java moss (christmas or willow works I heard java moss likes heat)
java fern
hornwort
elodea spp.

NOW IS THIS A GOOD PLAN? My black moors are notorious for killing plants. Does hornwort taste bad to them? Does it matter how bright light is for plants, AKA do low light plants die from too much light? IF SO I can give them some shade with an ice cream pail lid or something. I killed most of my java moss already and I might as well buy more.

Next. i got a 2L coke bottle and some yeast in my house and some sugar. http://www.plantedtank.net/articles/DIY-Yeast-CO2/7/

Does brown sugar work? We have a lot more brown sugar at my howse.

What happens if I put less than the standard yeast to sugar ratio? I heard 1/2 tsp---2 cups. What if I put 3 cups and 1/2 tsp? Or 2 cups --- 1/4 tsp?

And also, I have a bubbler valve for regulating air flow. Will that be sufficient to allow my CO2 to last for at least a few weeks, assuming I allow barely any out? If I allow barely any out, what % chance is there of an explosion?

I can't believe I am excited after my tank broke, but I get to move my fish into a bigger tank and plant it, and I get to buy a new stand and light, YAY. My "new" tank is very old and I haven't seen one with these dimensions, is there a good way to get custom stands or hoods?

I am going to add more White Clouds (I have 5 and they keep vanishing) And a shoal of fathead minnows (they are bigger and aren't likely to be eaten). I figure that with enough planting I can support more fish. Also the plants will keep the WCMM safer from predators. In the meantime I am going to clean out my gerbil's cage and the broken one and transfer the lil rats to the 29.

If anyone else has experience with coldwater + plants, yeast method, bushy-tailed gerbils, or goldfish and their least favorite grazing plants, that would be awesome.
