Will looking at the CO2 checker give me an accurate result of if there is enough oxygen in the water for my tank of red cherry shrimps? For example, if the checker is green, do I need to add an airstone? right now the checker is at blue (not enough co2) and i have a diy CO2 setup at a bubble every two seconds. Thanks

I'm not sure if the two are related. Dissolved oxygen and co2 levels can't necessarily be measured with a drop checker. That's why it's recommended that co2-injected tanks have a nice ripple at the surface, to promote oxygen exchange. My tank is running a sump. Therefore that extra water movement creates high levels of dissolved oxygen. That could be the reason why I'm able to keep my drop checker yellow all day (yellow typically means lethal levels for fish).

If you're concerned, add an airstone at night, otherwise use a powerhead and point it at the surface to create a nice ripple.

Also, check out this thread Tom started over at barrreport.com. It's about this same topic, and how important dissolved oxygen levels are for fish.

The post from barreport was quite interesting. I just put the "diffuser" airstone under my hob and there are BUBBLES EVERYWHERE in the tank. The indicator has actually turned kind of dark green (significant change). the shrimp seem to be fine, but i just put the air stone back in (near the top of the tank). Any suggestions on how to get enough o2 but also keep my CO2 at this level? THanks
