i was woundering how the co2 affects the fiish ? and how important is it to the plant...i have a 55g with 5 plants and 10 fish, do i really need to and co2 if i want my plants to live...and if so can i kill my fish with to much?

Read the stickies.

You can kill fish with too much co2, and yes plants need co2. However, there is co2 in the air we breath, and the water already. Your fish have a byproduct of co2, while the plants have a byproduct of o2.

the plants use it to photosythasis . what lighting yo u got . the plants should be fine as long as you have low lighting . but dont expect high growth rates . as much as 10-20% slower than co2 injected tanks

C02 made a big difference for my tank when I had it set up. Yes, too much of it will kill the fish. My friends kids turned the valve all the way up and in only about 30 seconds, his fish almost died. If you don't want to invest too much money in a c02 set up, you may want to to try a yeast co2 system...(a DIY thing that is super cheap and easy to do). When you set it up, you'll notice a big difference and when you start to see the little stream of air bubbles coming from the leaves of your plants you will know that the c02 is being converted to o2 by your plants...that was always my favorite part of my c02 tank...:)

my DIY is as followed
-2 liter bottle
-silicone
-valve
-air line tubing
-yeast
-suger
-baking soda
basically its really cheap.

Vinyl air line tubing will not work for co2. Silicone will do better, but will lose a large portion of the co2 per foot. Co2 tubing is the only recommended type of tubing for co2. If you search for DIY co2, and read the stickies, you will be shown what you need to do to setup a reaction co2 system.
