Is it really necessary to have a CO2 diffuser in a 45 gallon with only a couple live plants?

CO2 diffusers are not even required to have co2. CO2 injection is only needed for a few types of plant, and for high light setups.

what kind of plants? what kind of lighting? it might help plant growth which most of the time is a big plus.
