I saw some really cool looking pieces of coal and was curious if anyone has ever used it as a decoration in the tank. I have white sand and think the black luster would be a nice contrast. It weighs much less than the slate I am using now, and could make more interesting caves. Does anyone know of any draw backs to this? Would it negatively effect water quality? I think coal is mostly carbon, and in its hard form I dont think anything harmful would leech.

Unless you know the EXACT location and geological makeup of the collection site, it's not worth the risk to place coal in your tank. Coal (bituminous) by itself is not harmful to your fish. However, other materials will be found in coal depending on location collected. These other materials include sulphur, oil, arsenic, tar, manganese, etc.

If you're interested in incorporating black rocks for your tank, I recommend using obsidian (lava glass) instead of risking the coal.

Anthracite coal will cause less leaching, could take a long time, then again, fish are very sensitive, ssooo I'm siding with oddball on this one.

Display a couple of pieces on a shelf and tell people their black un-morphed diamonds... :screwy:
