Hey guys, I rearranged my tank, and I had a massive piece of driftwood that has been submerged for 2 months now.
I had it screwed to a rock at the base and I figured I could remove the rock and it should stay down on it's own now.

Well it didn't! So I tried for two hours to get it to stay down using rocks and I just couldn't get it.
I finally decided to use a metal coat hanger that went up to the cross brace to hold it down. This morning when I woke up I noticed some rust on the base of the coat hanger.

My questions are:
Is the rust bad?
Is the use of a metal coat hanger a bad idea?
Is there something else suitable I can use?

Thanks guys!

Not sure on the rust but dont think I would want it in my tank
You could try a piece of rigid PVC pipe and use that to hold it down should work

plastic zip ties?

The rust in the tank is only a problem if you don't do a lot of water changes. If the heavy metals accumulate, you will have troubles. If you do weekly 50% changes, the rust won't matter, it will just be ugly.

You don't really see the coat hanger, the driftwood is like a tree, it comes to within 4 inches of the brace....
This is why I wanted something small and as invisible as possible.
To be honest it was a last minute thing because I was frustrated!

I usually do 30% water change roughly every 3 days.

There'r some pix on and around here but here's the Cliffs:

Get slate
Drill slate
zip tie wood to slate
bury slate in gravel
fogetabooteet

It's funny you say that, that's exactly what I had before but it was a 12 x 12 patio stone because I needed the weight to hold it down, the thing is it really creates a large area for nitrates to collect under :(

I have never had a piece float for longer than about 3-4 weeks but again it was quite a big bit,I think different types of woods may take different times,I know that true bogwood ,from peat bog is very heavy and should sink fairly quickly if not straight away think the stuff I had was mopani and it took 3-4 weeks to sink fully under its own weight.
