Cockatoo

I worked with a goffin's for a while, they are extremely intelligent, playful birds. She loved playing with kids and could understand both english and spanish. They need a ton of attention, the one I worked with was handled for around six hours a day. She was also prone to mood swings, she could be the friendliest bird on earth one minute and like a bird fresh out of the wild the next.

All large birds are a very large commitment. The initial cost of everything will quickly look like pocket change with amount you will spend on them. It can easily cost you $200 a month. Also they require several hours of attention a day. And like ceeej said they are very prone to mood swings one minute you are cuddling with them and the next they are chomping down on your finger. If you or people you live with can't handle loud noises then these guys arent for you. I would highly recommend you volunteer at a rescue or a bird store and work with these guys regularly so you can see what it takes to care for one. Liz has an umbrella so hopefully she can give some of her experience.

Cockatoos even need more routine attention than other large parrots. All of them are very demanding of course but cockatoos for whatever reason are even more so with the amount of interaction they need.
If you have the money and more importantly the time to devote to one they are AWESOME pets, but you definitely need to put the work in. I assume you are referring to sulfur crested cockatoos when you say the yellow crested ones. Not that they really vary to much among species but moluccan cockatoos tend to be the friendliest.

They are amazing birds! They are very intelligent, curious, playful and gorgeous!
They have very specific environemental, housing, dietary and mental stimulation needs. The initial cost is significant but it is a longterm commitment and they will forever resemble a toddler in their need for attention, mental stimulation and play.
Do NOT get one if you have not had experience with other medium/large parrots!

I could talk for hours about cockatoos. :)
If you are serious about commiting to one for it's life I will offer every bit of knowledge I can to help you out! Cockatoos are very demanding, I could also help you find another parrot that would fit your needs if a cockatoo won't work. Cockatoos are one of my favorite parrots, though.
