I am in the process of setting up the filtration on my new 60 Gallon Coffee Table. The corners of the tank have holding boxes for filtration and I want to get the most out of them.

In 2 of the corners the tank has Pumps like what would go in a sump with basically a sponge on top..:(

In the 3rd Corner I just packed it out with Seachem Matrix. Will the Matrix work as a bio material if it is basically just sitting in the tank without Filtration??

Any ideas on how to get better use out of the pumps? There has to be something better then a sponge ontop of the pump lol...

So I am thinking about putting my eheim pump at the bottom of the canister and packing the top portion out with all of the bio Material. This way the water is pulling through the bio balls.... It is not forced to flow that way, but if that is the direction the pump is pulling that should work right?

It's a 60 gallon tank? With 800 gph pump flow, that is 10x turn over. You have enough 4.5x 16 3x space to hold porus media in. Mechanical filtration will be your difficulty.
A large sponge cut to fit the 4.5 x 12" with the pump, or an airlift. Might be the best, as cleaning out the detris build up, might become a hassle, without a mechanical filter, and a deep gravel bed at might require a powered vacuum to clean.

So here is what I did.. Think I Over did it, but want feedback
2 Fluval U4 Filters.
1 small pump with filter pad box attached.
1 corner of the tank as described above with large Eheim pump and a lot of Bio Material on top of it. ( It used to fill an FX5)

So the problem is that in one corner it is doing Mechanical, 1 Bio and then the two U4

I am mostly concerned about the bio working?
