Well, what size is the tank? What size of fish are you aiming for?

Man, just read some of the threads here. Tons of options. But like Lupin said... need to know tank size and what kind of fish you want to keep: agro, community, big, little, green, orange.......

Check out http://forum.nanfa.org/ for info on lots of warm, cool, and coldwater North American fish. As far as fish you are likely to find in the average petstore, there are white clouds, rosy reds/ fathead minnows, goldies and koi, and weather loaches. You can frequently find temperate-zone stowaways in feeder tanks, including various sunfish, killifish, darters, and catfish.

for larger tanks, fish like sunfish are a good option, they are similar to cichlids and attractive. Smaller tanks are good for things like Gambusia or killies

I would strongly recommend for OP to visiting this website as it have excellent information on natives.

Daces, Shiners, and Sculpins are nice options for smaller tanks as well as smaller Sunfish like Dollars, Orange Spots, Banded, or Pygmies.

FAT HEAD MINNOWS ARE FROM COLD FRESH WATER. THEY MAKE NICE TIGHT SCHOOLS AS JUVENILES. I WATCHED THEM IN THE WILD. ANY DACE OR SHINER WOULD BE PERFECT. IDK WHAT DACE OR SHINER LIVE IN CALIFORNIA, BUT I DOUBT THEY ARE COLDWATER. GET A CHILLER IF YOU PLAN TO KEEP THESE FISH DURING THE SUMMER.

KIND OF CLICHE BUT YOU COULD ALWAYS GET SUNFISH, BASS OR YELLOW PERCH.

ARTIC GRAYLING OR MOUNTAIN WHITEFISH WOULD BE PERFECT FOR A 100+ GALLON TANK. THEY MIGHT COME FROM TOO FAR OFF FOR YOU. IT MIGHT BE ILLEGAL BUT THE GOLDEN TROUT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL NORTH AMERICAN FISH EVER. IT IS NATIVE IN LAKES ON TOP OF CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINS. IT IS YOUR STATE FISH, YOU SHOULD KNOW IT.

IT GROWS 8-12 INCHES SO IT NEEDS A VERY BIG TANK, I WOULD SAY 100+ GALLONS.(if it is legal to transport live at all) THEY ARE NATIVE TO THE KERN PLATEAU.
