My friend sent me this sad pic.. the cold snap in florida again this year is taking its toll on the wildlife and fish... so sad to see..0103111440[1].jpg

i read that in the newspaper last week and it also touched me. odd cuz i'm not the type that gets touched by many wildlife stories. the article mentioned that they're cramming in canals and waterways that are heated by powerplants. At the time of the article it said 526 had been found dead in a year and 421 were believed to be cold releated

It's not nearly as bad so far this year as it was last year.
Last year we were working with FWC Manatee Rescue almost on a daily basis to pull in animals they deemed wouldn't make it over night.

We've only had to take in a couple so far this year. The water around Miami is about 67F right now. A couple weeks ago it was in the upper 50s. Last year we had an extended period where the water was in the low 50s.

We're geared up and ready if we get another rush though. We just refinished one of our huge holding pools for any of the manatees that need to come in. We also just spend a load on a brand new 5 pool sea turtle holding to add to what we already had.

Keep an eye out here:

Then find a part time job or get used to living just above the poverty line. Most of my staff pull in a whopping $9-$10 hr. with a couple years under their belt on top of a degree. I wish I could give them more. They are troopers and I love them to death!

(End of thread derail :D )

Oh man... that's so sad... last year the cold snap was brutal, people by my grandparents' house were volunteering to go out everyday and pull cold-killed fish out of the harbor to curb the smell...

On a side note, if that was me and I went outside and looked over the edge and saw that thing... it would scare the **** outta me... I kinda got freaked when I saw the picture, I can't imagine being there... I tried, but the imagination ended with me losing my footing and falling on top of it in the water **shudder**

Are these cold snaps natural or does it have something to do with humans?

Serious question, does this tie into global warming? Or not so much? Our polar bears are too warm, our manatees are too cold, I don't understand.
