Hi,

Is there a cool water fish I can house with a paddle tail newt in a tank size of 24x12x12? The paddle tail likes cooler water in the mid to high 60s, can tolerate low 70s for a short while. They can also eat fish so it needs to be something that is not too small. The current size of the newt is 5 inches and max size is 7 inches.

I saw some fish that looked sorta snake like and I think they were loaches. I forget the name, but I am sure they were in a cold water tank at the LFS. Anyone know what I am talking about? Anyway, have any suggestions? Thx

Maybe a dojo loach is it. I'm not familiar with a mud minnow but I will take a look. How about a small native catfish species? Like a madtom?

Bowfin!

just kidding...but if it were a larger tank for sure.

Mosquito fish maybe, but they are smaller. Sunfish for sure, like cold water cichlids. but the dojo loach is a great choice. Very active, but beware of open tank overflows...my current dojo went on a trip to my sump...very inquisitive, lol.

Yeah I might be able to get a hold of a 30x12x12 (20 long). I was thinking about adding a small sunfish like the blue spotted sunfish. Or maybe 1-2 small madtom catfish. IDK

Mixing fish with your newt is a bad idea. Anything he can't eat will stress him out. If you don't mind replacing fish, try small, peaceful, non-spiny fish such as white clouds.

You are right. I was doing some reading and they say its not a good idea. Maybe I can risk adding a 2nd paddle tail. I was thinking it would be better if they were male/female. According to some descriptions a male will have white markings in his tail. My paddle tail has no such markings so I assume its a female. But I am not entirely sure. I know a place that sells paddle tails and could scope it out and see if I find a male with white markings.

I was looking at some youtube vids and a good number of them have these newts with fish. And one I was with aggressive fish! Yeah but, does not mean its a good mix. I just want whats best for the newt.

Check out caudata.org. There are excellent newt caresheets and a forum with a very knowledgeable member base there. Good luck!
