Hey MFK, I was toying with the idea of doing a native tank and thought it would be a ton of fun to go and collect all the substrate (rubble rock) as well as the drift wood and big rocks from my local river as well as catch myself a nice herichthys cyanoguttatus for a 90. I am not concerned about bringing in any number of nasties with the decor as it will all be extensively boiled in a large tub over a fire. However I am concerned about the fish itself, what kind of measure/treatments should I take to ensure that he is a healthy fish? Would a barrage of internal/external anti parasite/bacterial/fungal meds over the course of a several weeks be overkill?

I think if you gave it a normal course of Jungle Parasite Clear - - or similar product - - as a treatment, that would be a sound idea. I don't think you should overdo it or you might just kill the fish in the process

Allright, thats what I figured a generic broad course of meds. Thanks man!

I have collected native sunfish from my area and used Jungle parasite clear in combonation with aquarium salt with great results. An alternative to meds is a fresh garlic regimine for 4-6 weeks. You can cut up fresh garlic cloves and stuff them in pieces of shrimp. Feed once a day for approximately 4-6 weeks and it should clear most internal parasites. Got the idea from an article in TFH, the ask Jack section, as he uses it with all newly aquired wild caught discus.
