Hey all, I was just wondering. Were in the world would you go collecting for native fish in Orlando Florida??? I'm on a very low budget atm and cannot aford to order fish online. Sach's site looks promising, but they are a bit pricey for me. I mean, 12$ for a 3 inch bluegill? No way. I've been to serveral creeks, though they were all man made. All they had were spotted bulhead, lmb, killis, and mosquito fish. Not even native shiners....I would LOVE to get my hands on some darters, warmouth, and grass pikerel.

Heres a link that may help. Im not sure if you will have much luck finding grass pickerel in your area, prob more likely Chain pickerel; which get pretty large. It looks like Redfin pickerel can be found in the extreme Northeast of your state.Maybe someone from florida may know a bit more as far as what species of darters and shiners can be found. The Northeast U.S. is one of the most abundant areas for Darters, but im not sure about what species are available near you in the south . Good luck! http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/Freshwater_Fish_ID.htm

Good idea if hes looking to stock a tank thats over 150 gallons :) And since hes looking for Darters ,grass pickerel, and Shiners I doubt thats the case. Not to mention that those fish are Not North American native species

I'm not after P bass, which I now find common in lfs for 10$. I would also love some black crappie. If only I new were to fish for them. I have a new 120 gallon tank which I would like to stock with them, or just one alone.
Where would I fish for them? I know of a few places recomended by bait shop owners, but I have yet to try them, and I want to be certain I'm going to catch at least one.

Central Florida Farms sells native Floridian fish. Their site gives pictures and prices. Fish are really inexpensive and I think shipping is free in some cases.

Nanfa (north american native fish association) has a wealth of information on where how, the laws, and more on native fish collecting and breeding. Many of the.members are from the south and central Floridal. They have a very informative website that includes breeding and conservation of native fish.
