Collecting plants, substrate, etc.. from lakes and ponds

I was curious to see if its safe to collect live plants/vegetation, sand, driftwood and so on from my local lake for my indoor pond.

Safe or no?

Anything collected from a local lake should be treated before being placed in an aquarium or pond. Place plants in a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 19 parts water) for 1-3 minutes depending upon how delicate the plant is. Driftwood should be either bleached or dried out in the sun.
