Collecting your own sand?

I live on the gulf and i was wondering if i could collect my own sand?
I wouldnt do it on public beaches or anything id get it from a sandbar

think high silica but if ur ready to fight hair alage and what ever else is in the sand hitching a ride

I believe it is illegal to and there are so many pollutants in the sand and it would just be a mess in your tank not worth it

I bought a tank that came with sand from the keys. The tank was up and running for years but as soon as you touched the sand there was so much silt that you could not see anything. It took me weeks to get it clean

It will cost you a couple extra bucks, just get pfs or play sand.

I agree with the above... but what type of fish are you doing..? Brackish or fresh I use pool filter sand for mine and i havent dove in to saltwater yet but the reasearch i found.. defently not recomended

I used play sand in my salt tank and it was fine after about a month. It pollutes the water with silt pretty bad even after a good wash for awhile.
