Im going to college after this year and I need to condense all of my tanks into one 40gal aquarium. Im looking to try something new. I have experience with saltwater fish only, reefs, and monster fish tanks. Im looking to get into something new with this 40, and I am willing to do brackish, fresh, or saltwater. Im interested in hearing what different kinds of species of puffer I might be able to house in a 40. Looking for something that gets a little bigger, I dont want to have 4 dwarfs in there, but just maybe one thats 5-6" long. Thanks. :D

Humpback puffer could work.

Dogface could also work.

Nile might work but youre better skipping.

I would go with the humpback because they are really cool fish to own.

Depends on what is available in your area to purchase. Good luck finding a palembangensus (Humpback). A single GSP would be good in a 40g, so if you have to go home for breaks, the water will be dilute enough that you won't have to worry much about WC while you're away. They can also go a week w/o food, if they are large enough.

Green Spotted Puffer

I feel like the dogface might get too big for a 40. The humpback seem very sedated, and I am going to have to mail order this puffer pretty much no matter what. All we have left in a 50 mile radius is two petcos, and one petsmart, which have killed off all the good "pure" fish stores.

So basically I think Im looking at one of these two:

Tetraodon nigroviridis

or

Tetraodon fluviatilis

Any words of advice on either and/or potential tank mates!?! Thanks for all the help so far! :D

Good luck finding a fluviatilis. Look closely in F8 tanks, they are often thrown in there, as they look a lot alike.

Min tank size for a fluviatilis is 40g, so no tank mates. 30g for GSP but there are no fish that can take the ride up to SW from FW the GSP will need, so better to wait until that is done & maybe get a small fast-moving SW fish. Although, it is probably best left alone, as in a tank that size there won't be much room to hide from a puffer's teeth.

Hmm I would say a single Tetraodon nigroviridis would make a true pet fish. They would be able to recognise you ect.

I would say those two puffer are too big for a 40 gal.Dogface needs at least 90 gal or bigger. Same goeas for Nile puffer(Fahaka) which needs at least 120gal.

I would say either go for lots of Dwarf puffer(FW), a GSP(BW) and a Figure8(BW) puffer.

Any puffer would recognize its owner when spent time with (especially feeding time:D) They are kinda like sea-puppies.

I have taken Monos argentis/sebae, butis butis, snowflake eels, columbian sharks, and green/silver/ruby/scats with my GSPs from FW to SW. The butis took the longest, and I had to pull him out, but I was eventually able to drip them all to SW.

Still it was probably more work than you would want to do.
