What would the monsterfishkeepers think about a 20L grow out tank that I could take with me to college? I was thinking maybe a smaller midas or something along those lines. As for filteration- Could I put an AC110 on there for bio and a smaller one for some mech? Or would that create too much water movement?
I'm trying to find a fish to grow in 2 years that could be bumped into a 120 after I leave dorms and get a house.
Any suggestions?

20L tank? You know we use gallons in the US. A midas would outgrow a 20L in one semester. A ac110 would be overkill for a 20L. If you want to grow something out, get a 30gallon and a grammode.

er, 20 long.

stay away from ca/sa cichlids if all you can provide is a 20 gallon unless you're going to do some dwarves (rams and such) or possibly cryptoheroes species. If I were you I'd get some honduran red points, or nanoluteus.

even for 6-8 months? I own larger tanks, but the building limits me to 20. I may only be there until Jan or Feb, then I can move it into the currently empty 120.

if he's 2 inches now, how long till he's out of the 20? and how much filter power should I have with him? My parents are into fish quite a bit, so many filters are around for me to use! :)

My midas have all grow about a inch a month in a 130gallonn with 50% waterchanges every week. Yours probably won't grow as fast in a tank that size. I wouldn't keep a midas in a 20gallon. Midas will grow too fast IMO, get a slow growing cichlid like grammode, motaguense, festae, or maybe a datnoid with some smaller stuff.

if it out grow it, you can always take it back home, and swap something in for it. fish in smaller tanks usually take longer to grow. you would be fine for a while, but like you said it's only a few months. it's inevitably your decision, go for it if you want to try.

[remember people it's a grow out he knows he has to move it eventually]

a small firemouth can be kept alone in a 20 to grow. kribs or rams or dwarfs as stated, but that's if you want to keep little guys.

you can give a grow out a shot, it seems you come from a background of fishkeepers, so i'm sure you'll make a smart decision

I think I'd probably move him out at the 8 inch mark...and I'd do 50% (maybe a little less) water changes every week, just like on our other tanks. I've never had any non african cichlid before, so maybe I'll give it a shot... If he does grow too fast, he can just be put in a bigger tank back home. College is only 45 minutes from my home, so I could even continue to care for him.
I'm still thinking that an AC110 might be too much water movement? 500 gallons per hour, right? Would that be too turbulent?
