Hello,
I picked up a colomesus asellus a couple of weeks ago due to a promise i made my son... He picked the fish as long as it wouldn't outgrow his tank 29g...

He saw puffers and said thats what he wanted... I told him sorry they get too big over time for your tank.. but thanks to the intelligent LFS employee he informed us that this puffer would not get over 6" and is a slow grower....

I've been doing alot of reading on these guys and find them quite interesting... I wouldn't say this one is shy or timid. My son's tank was full of convict fry and within seconds of hitting the water (after being acclimated) the puffer did a seek and destroy which was quite terrifying at first but apparently he was just really hungry as it gobbled down several fry then swam about like nothing happened...

I am ready for this, but i want to make sure it is getting what it needs...

My question is can i feed this puffer crushed saltwater shellfish.. I have access(Atlantic ocean to be exact) to fiddler crabs, mussles, clams, periwinkles... I am pretty sure that quahogs would be out of the question as the shell is extremely thick and hard but would tiny periwinkles be ok?

TIA,
Paul.

You could but I'd freeze them to kill off any nasties, defrost in tank water & liquid FW fish vitamins. I've never seen one >3".
