Can you guys posts some pics of some smaller sens? like you would find at a petsmart or petco (2-3 inches).

I saw some at petco the other day that looked nothing like the ones I bought at petsmart a month ago. These were dark dark grey. One of the ones I have was a light brown and the other is a light brown/light grey.

How much color variation do these guys have?

i just bought one yesterday that looks dark grey, i have 2 others i bought from petsmart a few weeks ago and they are completely different, i thought that they may be another species so i bought one, i really like them no matter what they are, sorry i don't have a digital camera even though i need one.

Polypterus senegalus coloration can range from olive drab dorsal with white or cream color ventral surfaces to grey dorsal with white or cream color ventral sections.I have seen them them so pale when young it looked like a platinum but darkened with age to "normal" coloration.
Yes substrate as well as lighting intensity can also affect coloration.
When extremely young senegals have horizontal stripes running the lenght of the body these are usually gone by the time they are sold-Anne

If have had my senegal bichir that I got from petsmart about 10 months ago. Was bought at the common dark dark grey and now is a light light tan. Because of the new sand. He is now 7" was bought at 2.5". Here he is IMGP0976.JPG

Pic above is current about 2 months on white sand. This pic is when he was on gravel at about 3.5".
