Hey I was thinking about using 3M colorquartz S grade in my soon to be planted tank. Has anybody tried this stuff in a heavily planted tank or know if it will do well? Or maybe mixed with flourite sand too?

k bye

there are a lot of people using it from the planted tank forums. It gets good reviews for holding slopes and plants. It is inert so don't have chemistry problems, you just have to give all of the ferts.

well i planned on doing ferts anyway. I was gonna start out with the flourish stuff cuz it seems easier for a beginner and then when I get things moving switch over to the dry stuff and such. I also have 2 bags of the flourite black sand that i started with but that stuff is mega expensive. So I was thinking I would mix the two.

Have you ever hear of mineralized top soil? It is basically dirt that you cap with something like sand or gravel.

Here is a link on mineralized top soil.

With this substrate there is little need for fertilizers, and it is very cost effective. People have been very successful with this and a top layer of colorquartz.

Just another option to look at.

I use 3M colorquartz S grade black.

If you already have 2 bags of Fluorite sand, I would just get more of it instead of mixing it.

I know a guy in GWAPA who got a chance to watch that presentation and says it was very good. I made the MS one time as a trial for a 10g and can say it works fantastically. i made a pool of it in 3M Colorquartz like the guide shows and I've never seen plants grow better with no added ferts.

wow jag nice tank. Is that a lillypad behind your driftwood? Plus I gotta say I love the black sand, I wish I went with black instead of regular sand!
