Hey all,

this is my first post, just wondering if anybody out there has had success with these guys and can point me in the right direction. I have just purchased my first "monster" tank (225g 72x24x30) and I am thinking about a species tank. Thought I would start with 20 of these little guys and work my way down to 10 to 12 of the best looking ones. Am I completely out of my mind or can this work. Also, how should the tank be aquascaped? Open with sandy bottom or sandy bottom with rock structures for hiding? (This tank is going to be a room divider)

Stay away from columbians! Do a nice group of synodontis petricola. Or clown loaches! 20 6" clowns would rock

This are beautiful fish but i dont think you can do more then maybe 4 of them in that tank. Ciclidfish is right, they do need brackish water as adults and can even be acclimated to full saltwater conditions. About their size, they grow to be about 14 in. in the wild and around 12 in a home aquarium. They need as much space as possible since they are a migratory species. I own two of this beautiful fish, they are swimming in brackish water for now but will be in saltwater in a few months, I'm only saying this because to me it is very exciting to think that i started with a freshwater tank and will end up having a saltwater (maybe even a mini reef) while keeping my favorite fish in the tank.

Good luck!!!

I have 4 of these guys also in brackish water. I got them from a pet store who had them in fresh. They were covered in ick. Brought them home aclimated to brackish in a few hours and was ick free and healthy within 24hrs. They have thrived ever since. They are a very skitish fish though and like to school together. I wouldn't go more then 4-5 like Mgoc said. Even in a 220 they are very active and like all cats have a large bio load. I have figure 8 and green puffers in with mine for upper level movement and everyone works good together.

12-14".. 4, maybe 5. My three are 2 1/2 years, at around 8 or 9 inches, and are outgrowing their 75 gal. As luv4scjjt said, they are indeed skittish fish and are sensitive to loud noises. I approach my tank slowly and once they know I'm there, they're fine. Hardy fish and swim almost constantly. A good powerhead for simulated current is good as they begin life in the river and migrate towards the saltier estuaries and even the open sea as they mature. I wouldn't recommend for a room divider. They spook and crash into the side of the tank sometimes. Good luck and enjoy that nice tank!
