anyone keep columbian tetras with geos? i heard these tetras might be nippy on fins... which is not cool since some of my geos and satanopercas have nice streamers coming along! any experience in this?

JK47 keeps a big school with his maps. I wouldn't imagine any nipping issues unless you kept a single tetra or something. Keep them in a big school so if there is any aggression is spreads out between themselves.

+1 its worth a try just make sure that the school is large enough, usually even the most nippy of tetras tend to focus their energies only amongst themselves if the school is large enough

I also keep a school of 20 Columbian Tetras with my Eartheaters. I've had them together for over a year and never seen any streamer nipping. I started out with six and added more over a period of several months.

I really like them - they have great color and get to a nice size.

Hyphessobrycon columbianus is hands down my favorite tetra species. Like Dan, I keep a school of 20. There has never been a single filament nip on any geo species I've kept them with and I've kep with with three different species. The are big, colorful and all aggression is conspecific. That is a plus actually because they interact and fill out the upper region of the tank really well. They are either in a very tight group or boucing after of one another. Really nice/ideal addtion to any geo tank, excellent husbandry for other peaceful species as well. I feed both the Satanoperca and tetras 1mm NLS since the tetras are big enough. They don't touch food once it hits the substrate so they compliment one another during feeding which happens to be a plus for me.

sounds good! i'm getting 12. you think that's enough?
i was going to get 20 lemon tetras for the discus tank and 12 columbians for the geo/satanoperca tank.

12 should be fine. If you get both species you should report back your opinions between the two. I am curious to see if you think one is better than the other and why.

I don't know how you would define "better" tetra? They all pretty much serve the same function, it's basically a matter of what you like looking at (color and body shape). There aren't a lot of bigger tetras though.

I hear a lot of mixed reviews on lemons. Things like they do not school well togther (all over the place etc..) I'm not looking to define the "better" tetra, just curious on the OP's opinion between the two if both species are kept. It's perfectly OK to ask for opinions..

I don't know what it is with tetras but they seem to be really hit and miss as far as how tightly they school and how active they are. You have go get a big school, but if they're too big they can break off in to two schools. And sometimes they just seem to not want to school. Or they could school in one tank but move something around or change tanks and they decide they don't want to school tightly anymore. :(
