Hello everyone since this is my first post I will introduce myself. My name is Robert and live just outside of Detroit, MI and are a very large breeder of red belly Piranhas, I currently working on a growout project for breeding gold piranha as well as EBJD.

About a 1-1/2 years ago I built a main system that consist of 8 75 gallon tanks and a large sand filter. This was made for growout for piranhas at times can consist of 5-15,000 1/2"-2" in size. I can tell you the sand filter was not made for filtering that kind of waste created by so many fish.

This weekend I had just about enough of the sand filter not filtering properly so I made a descent stackable filter loaded with filter media and bio balls. Two of the tops tanks where just connected to try it out and see if there would be a difference in the clarity of water and fine particals.

I might be able to bred piranhas and rise the fry very effortless but am not an exspert when it comes to creating filtration systems. I have been checking this site out reading alot of post and if a group of people could help me out with ideals to improve this system it would diffently be the people of monsterfishkeepers.

I was thinking of running all the tank threw several of these stackable system i created and still using the sand filter to create perfect water conditions for my baby reds.

Any ideals or comments would be greatly appreciate

Thanks
Rob

If your bio tower is too enclosed (as shown currently), the media will rapidly strip oxygen and lose efficiency. Either place the very bottom of tower underwater with airstones within (to create a sealed counter current of air) or cut some air holes in sides of the tower. If you get hot summers, the second method is efficient for cooling too. The danger of this is you will naturally increase the load levels since the filter will oxygenate and handle bio-loads efficiently and if ever there is a power failure you may get caught out. Its easily possible to have more fish than water with efficient filtration.

If your power feeding and the bio tower is not coping with mechanical filtration, think about a floating bead filter which will do both mechanical and bio efficiently.

That's a very simple system, I like very much. I also second punching some holes near the top of each bucket to let air in. I would put a sheet of filter pad in the first bucket for mechanical filtration.

Thanks for the advice and I did cut two hole about 1" x 1" in each side of the 3 tubs. I do have to clean the filter material two times a day since there is alot of waste. This weekend a second tower will be built the same way each will be connected to two top tanks also the sand will be replaced.

I think this will work good causing the sand filter to not work as hard. will let you know how this work out in the future.

looks very nice yea the holes will be great also if you can get more oxgen to the bio media you would have a way better affect :) lets us know the affect it has on you filtration system good luck.

Hi robertm1 and a belated :welcome:.

Two questions and I'll wait for further updates on you system changes.

1) Where "just outside of Detroit"?

2) What the heck do you do with 15000 piranha?:nilly:

You've got a very nice & clean system too.

Thanks for the welcome Dr. Joe. My location is Roseville MI and if I where to walk a block in two direction the city would be Warren and Fraser. I didn't come on this site to boost about myself but I have to be one of the biggest if not the biggest distributor of captive breed Red Belly Piranhas.

Thanks for the help guys!!! Today I did install another tower made the same way so I will keep you updated on how things go.

Thanks
Rob

Say HI to my Aunt & cousin for me :D.

So, do you name them all before adoption? :nilly:

Keep us posted on the upgrade. This is a very good test.
