I was at the local LFS,and found 2 Pikes, they were labeled "Common Pikes" and i was told they grow to 2 ft.I have an almost empty 100 gal tank,so i decided to get the bigger of the 2.I know nothing about Pikes so i am hoping that you guys can help.A little info on this guy.he is about 4-5 inches,he is kind of Olive green but sometimes he looks brownish,he does have some black markings on his body,i would look him up on the inter net but i dont know his exact Latin name or even what species of Pike he/she is.I dont own a Digi Cam(yet, hope Santa brings 1!!!)The closest pic i have seen is the Venezualion(probably not spelled right)Well he only cost 10 bucks,if that helps.Maybe if someone has a Pike like this you could post a pic so i could better know what kind of Pike i own. Thanks:confused:

Yeah, sounds like you got Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela'. They ARE one of the largest growing pikes, so tank space is important as they continue to grow. They aren't one of the most attractive pikes, but they are still awesome pikes. Plenty of personality and spunk. Feed it a variety of frozen foods, pellets, and the like. Try to stay away from live foods. It will get more aggressive as it grows, especially once it hits subadult. Your in for a lot of fun, so get ready for a ride.

Yeah, like i said that pic of the Ven comes the closest to what my Pike looks like. But i will say just having this guy for a few hours has already given me "Pike fever!!!):nilly:

Here are some decent pics to help ID. It sounds like a ven, but you never know.

Check out the rest of the site too. Click the "pikes" on the top of the page and then click "photos" on the left side of the page. There are a few pics for you to browse through and compare.

Thanks for the site.its just hard because they all look alike.I noticed a little while ago that with the lights out, this Pike has black lines going allthe way down his body vertically, does this help??He also is very shy.:nilly:

Does it have an ocelli at the base of its caudual fin. if it does its most likely a Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela'...if it DOESN'T have the ocelli at the base of the caudual, most likely a Crenicichla johanna. You can google each name and come up with many. Just click on the photo/image option of google to see all the pictures.

buy the aqualog book with the pike on the cover, Southamerican Cichlids I. You'll def be looking for more. Also just search for crenicichla images and you'll get a good bit too.

Just make sure to have $$$ handy as you wont find em for $10 that much. If they werent beating ea other up in the store go back and get the other, might have a pr.

you got to be ****ting me... i just picked up 3 of those... 2 ft... guy at the lfs said 6 in. 2ft?!?! im in trouble

how easy are they to breed??

Same thing happened to me.

I was aware that most pike species grew past 12", so I took his advice with a grain of salt. Luckily, I have a 125 I can drop him in once he out grows his home. Mine was purchased @ 3" in August. He's approaching 6" now, and seems to grow by the day. It has a VERY voracious appitite, and its exciting watching it eat anything. I LOVE this fish.
