Hi all,

Firstly I want to thank everyone in this forum so much. You guys will never know how valuable you've been as a resource of information for me. Last year I had a common Pleco foisted off on me, this poor fish has had a hell of a life and I had zero experience keeping fish. The emergency "guess I own a fish now" starter tank I had him in was a disaster but using the advice I found on this forum I got him setup in a lovely 75 gallon home and for the last year he's been living his best fishy life.

I'm posting for the first time because Hank has recently developed a growth of some sort protruding from his nostril. I think it's his nostril? It honestly looked like he'd gotten one of his food pellets perfectly stuck in there. I don't know what it is nor how to treat it. His tank is a little small for him but I test twice a week and the levels are all normal for his species. I do a 25% water change once a week and 50% with a filter media change once a month. Any advice would be sorely appreciated. Thank you all so much for your time and help.

Hard to make out what it could be. I’d watch it if the fish is acting normal. Could be a papilloma. Can always take it to an aquatic vet.

Just an update and conclusion to this thread. Hanks growth started expanding over the last few weeks so I looked into a fish vet in the area. Turns out they are few and far between. I drove from the Kennedy Space Center area of Florida to St. Pete to see Dr. Lore at Bay Animal and Aquatic Hospital, I highly recommend them if you're within driving distance. Hank's mass ran so deep into the nasal cavity that Dr. Lore didn't want to risk going farther. She's sending off the sample to the University of Florida but suspects that it's likely malignant.

I'd kinda convinced myself that it was just some normal fish malady or a result of my inexperience at fish keeping so the likely cancer diagnosis sucker punched me. Thanks for all the advice over the years guys. Hank wouldn't have made it this far if it hadn't been for this forum.

Thanks for the update and hope you get good news on Hank's growth biopsy.

Apologies, I forgot to post an update on Hank's diagnoses. The way Dr. Lore explained it to me is that the U of F's lab report, which I've included below, showed hank to be suffering from a form of adenocarcinoma. We discussed treatment options as there is a facility near me that does radiation therapy on fish. In the end we decided to let Hank live out whatever time he has left as the treatment is experimental, costly and of course, stressful for him to say the least. Hank is currently doing well spending his days happily munching on wood and cucumbers.
