common pleco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A big aquarium of 75 to 150 gallons, driftwood, gravel, water (Always a good idea ;) ) Not bright light, Some plants that you don't necessarily care about... They're easy, really.

Yea they're definitively one of the easier fish. They also get along with just about everything.

A large footprint is better than a tall tank.
Some like this tank is plain, but suits large plecs.

Or this tank is dedicated to plec. There are 2 in there.

Make sure you provide some large caves for the pleco to dwell in, as they are primarily nocturnal fish and like to have somewhere out of the light where they can spend their time in during the day :) .

Try not to over-plant the tank, these plecos need a fair amount of open space on the bottom of the tank to swim about in, and small plants which are not well established may be uprooted by the pleco as it trys to swim about in the tank.

Make sure the tank has strong filtration, these pleco's produce loads of poop and you will need some decent filtration if you are to keep your water quality good in control.

Well, the parts of general fishkeeping apply, a tank the right size and nice clean water, but DIET is one of the most important factors. Guessing your "common" would either be a Hypostomus or a Pterygoplitchthys they need a good deal of roughage, fresh veggies with some meaty foods such as worms too. When younger they do well with more veggies, but tend to want more protein packed foods as they age. I'd feed a 75:25/70:30 veggie: protein diet. Best to feed at lights out as they are nocturnal fish.
