ive always wanted to try a community setup but ive never gotten to it because something usually happens. I have a 20 gallon with one neon tetra (only one to survive of 6). im going to get more but what other fish would work with these. ive noticed that most fish would just want to eat it. i was thinking a type of corydora

I had a planted 10 with 5 neons and a couple of smaller corys (peppered corys stay nice and small). May want to try cardinal tetras instead of neons - they seem to be a bit hardier

I'd go for some of the more common tetras. Any tetras would shoal together, and look nice. Cardinals are nice, although I'm not really sure they are hardier. More expensive too.

id get a mix of tetras, for example 6 neons, 6 cardinals, 6 black skirts, 6 rummynose(not sure if all those would fit)

A school of 6-10neons with a school of cories makes a nice peaceful small tank.Neons are hard to get through the first few weeks but after that are pretty hardy. You could go with a hifin paleatus for a fancy look,or Ive always liked julii or similar for cories.

community tanks work especialy well as a planted tank you dont have to go nuts just get some nice substarte my personal fav is eco complete soil moderatly plant your tank with plants of your choice as far as fish neons do well in schools myabe 8 to 12 cory cats do well and also prefr numbers guppys german or bolivian rams would work for color maybe a small catfish if you like do some research and see what you are interested in before you go to your perstore and window shop aquabid has so much to offer someone with a little knowledge good luck
