Ever get frustrated in not being able to mix a great fish or a fish youre so excited to add on to your tank ?

I recently aquired the best quality red tailed gouramy from Jed ( The Trust ) and this thing is a show piece. Dark Purple body with hints of red at the face. Its got a decent hump and the red on the tail is absolutely amazing. The only thing comparable to this thing cosmetically is if
you could somehow find a 13 inch blue betta ... with better color.

Now on to the rant.. My very docile arowana somehow found this Gouramy as a threat and proceeded to shred its tail. Now the Gourami isnt exactly a pushover ( it was raised in Jeds Cichla tank ) so naturally it fought back. Needless to say, i found the two fish with battle scars when i came home one night. The aro had it worse with scratches on the scales and the lower eyelid ripped off.

So now , i have two very beautiful specimens that i cannot put in the same tank. Anybody ever been in a similar situation? 2 favorite fish that cant be mixed together??

I had the same problem with My Giant Gourami and my Albino Oscar. Lived together fine when the gourami was smaller, once they got to be the same size they started fighting fairly often. I came home from work one day and they had got into so bad they flipped the glass top of my tank open and splashed water all over my computer moniter and afried it. Now they are forever seperated.

the RTGG will be nice a nice 265 :) come next sunday

Yup. I loved my Red Hooks. Beautiful fish. With two caveats:
  1. They were skittish like hell and freaked out all of my other fish. I already discussed that in another thread, I don't want to get started on it again :swear:
  2. They were incompatible with plants. While I was throwing away half a bucket of water lettuce per week before I got them, they completely eradicated that plant from my tank. They ate Vallisneria, Echinodorus, Cryptocoryne, even Anubia and they tore apart my Java Fern!!
Fortunately, rottbo has some room in his tank and a small school of red hooks of his own. Now his tank is fuller and mine emptier. While the plants recover and the pansy fish come out of hiding, I am thinking about what to add next...

plecos and sole. didnt work. had to put them in different tanks. had to seperate a few diff sp of pleco from each other over the years

i have the same scenario with my 12'' widebar and RTG aro so the dat looks to be going.
its funny but i had the same problem with a indo i owned which imo was one of the best indos i have ever seen but it hated my green aro and tried to kill it at every opportunity.

My oscar hates my GT, it took 2 weeks for the GT's scars to heal after the oscar had his way

Well... its been weeks and the gourami and arowana still have no love lost for each other.
I will have to let the gourami go... I tried mixing them ago a few days ago the results are the same... biting and flaring at each other. I might have a chance of making it work if i had a bigger tank . Other than that, i would to accept deafeat for now.

Could you split the tank into two seperate areas so you could keep both of them? If it were me i would probably just break down and buy a new tank for one of them. But then again im a pushover for my animals.

how big is your tank rtf
